What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the pulp of a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, injury, or infection, a root canal in Leighton Buzzard is necessary to remove the infected tissue and preserve the tooth. This treatment helps to eliminate pain and prevent the need for tooth extraction, allowing patients to retain their natural teeth.

Dr Nooshin Vasfi is among the very few dentists with specialist and extensive university post-graduate trainings in both root canal treatment and vital pulp therapy—focused on saving teeth—and implant dentistry, which replaces teeth that cannot be saved.

She earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1998, followed by additional professional qualifications. In 2004, she obtained her Diploma of Clinical Dental Sciences from the Eastman Dental Institute and Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In 2006, Dr Vasfi joined the specialist registrar training programme at Guy’s Hospital, completed her Master of Clinical Dentistry at the University of London, and then achieved Membership of Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010. Subsequently, she was listed as an Endodontic Specialist on the General Dental Council’s UK register. She is also a member of the British Endodontic Society and the Langham Endodontic Study Group.

Dr Vasfi has over 27 years of clinical experience and has taught post-graduate students in endodontics at King’s Hospital. She established her Leighton Buzzard specialised Dental practice and specialist endodontic referral base in 2009. In addition to her endodontic specialty, she completed extensive implant dentistry training (with a strong prosthodontic focus) and obtained her Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Eastman Dental Institute (University College London) in 2015. She has since completed more than 400 hours in advanced gum treatments and advanced restorative procedures, enabling her to reconstruct and rehabilitate severely damaged teeth back to health and function.

She has been investing heavily in the education and training of her team of excellent nurses, and in advance technology for her dental practice, Premier Smile Dental Excellence.

What causes the need for a root canal treatment?

The need for a root canal in Leighton Buzzard arises from several factors, including:

  • Tooth Decay: Deep cavities that reach the pulp can cause infection and require a root canal treatment to save the tooth.

  • Trauma or Injury: A tooth that has been cracked or fractured can expose the pulp to bacteria, leading to infection.

  • Repetitive Dental Procedures: Multiple dental treatments on a tooth can sometimes damage the pulp.

  • Gum Disease: Severe gum disease can also lead to damage of the tooth pulp, causing infection.

In all these cases, a root canal treatment is the best way to treat the problem and save the tooth from extraction.

How is a root canal treatment done?

A root canal in Leighton Buzzard is typically performed in one or two visits to the dental office. The process involves the following steps:

  1. Examination and Diagnosis: Dr Nooshin Vasfi uses CBCT imaging and other diagnostic tools to assess the condition of your tooth and determine the extent of the infection.

  2. Anaesthesia: The area around the affected tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.

  3. Removing the Infection: Dr Nooshin Vasfi carefully removes the infected pulp and cleans the inner chambers of the tooth.

  4. Filling the Tooth: The empty space is then filled with a special material to prevent further infection.

  5. Sealing the Tooth: A crown or filling may be placed over the tooth to restore its function and appearance.

Throughout the process, Dr Nooshin Vasfi uses microscope-assisted techniques for precision and to minimise discomfort.

How is infection treated during a root canal treatment?

During a root canal in Leighton Buzzard, the infection is treated by removing the infected tissue from the pulp. Dr Nooshin Vasfi will clean and disinfect the root canal thoroughly to eliminate any bacteria or remaining infection.

Additionally, an ultrasonic disinfectant may be used to ensure that every part of the tooth is completely sterilised. After the tooth is cleaned and dried, it is filled with a biocompatible material to seal it and prevent further infection.

How long does it take for a root canal treatment to heal?

The healing time after a root canal in Leighton Buzzard varies from patient to patient. Generally, most people experience some discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Pain relief medications can help manage this temporary discomfort. Full healing of the tooth may take a few weeks, as the surrounding tissues heal and the tooth settles. Dr Nooshin Vasfi will provide aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and may schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the progress.

How much is a root canal in Leighton Buzzard?

The cost of a root canal in Leighton Buzzard varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the type of tooth involved, and whether additional procedures (such as a crown) are needed. Dr Nooshin Vasfi offers transparent pricing and will provide a full breakdown of costs during the consultation. You will also be informed of any potential insurance coverage options available to help with the cost.

How to avoid root canal treatment

While it may not always be possible to prevent the need for a root canal treatment, there are steps you can take to minimise your risk:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth twice daily and floss regularly to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay.

  • Visit the Dentist Regularly: Regular check-ups and cleanings allow your dentist to spot problems early and prevent major issues.

  • Avoid Grinding Your Teeth: Use a mouthguard if necessary to protect your teeth from excessive wear or damage.

By maintaining a strong oral care routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of needing a root canal in Leighton Buzzard.

How to stop throbbing pain after root canal treatment

If you experience throbbing pain after a root canal in Leighton Buzzard, it’s usually due to the body’s natural healing process. However, you can manage discomfort with:

  • Painkillers: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate mild to moderate pain.

  • Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the outside of the cheek can reduce swelling and soothe the area.

  • Avoiding Hard Foods: Stick to soft foods for a few days to avoid further irritation.

Dr Nooshin Vasfi will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment for a smoother recovery.
